What Shirley Smith Wanted
A busy mental health professional in Wilmington, NC, Shirley Smith lacked a central location for her extensive wardrobe. Instead, her clothes were spread throughout the home’s original closets, making dressing for the day harder than it needed to be.
Her hope was to reclaim unused space and transform it into a serene dressing room where all of her clothing and accessories could be organized and on display.
The team at California Closets understood my vision and truly created a custom solution that works wonders. I love everything about my new walk in closet.
How California Closets did it
Working with the California Closets Wilmington team, design consultant Marcy Wright set out to create a walk in closet that would bring order to the chaos of Shirley’s clothing storage challenge.
Her first step was to understand Shirley’s vision: She wanted a space that felt bright, open, and – most important — orderly. Because of this, a key piece of the design was a layout that allowed Shirley to see everything at a glance.
Along the walls, hanging sections were added to hold clothes while open shelving features handbags, shoes, and hats – making the most of every inch. To further boost organization, Marcy added a center island with additional drawers and jewelry storage.
A crisp white finish was used throughout, lending to the open and airy feel, while ribbon lighting added a glamorous, unexpected touch. The aesthetic was exactly what Shirley had hoped for.

After a smooth and efficient install, Shirley finally has a gorgeous custom walk in that feels like a high-end boutique – one where she can relax and reflect at the beginning and end of each day.
