WHAT BOBBY BERK WANTED

Bobby Berk, the Emmy-winning television host and interior design expert on Netflix’s Queer Eye, came to California Closets Los Angeles with a somewhat unique project. He’d recently purchased a home that would become his design firm’s new headquarters – and wanted the primary bedroom closet transformed into functional work storage.

“I wanted to find a space where I could really showcase our designs and products in a residential interior setting,” Berk told Architectural Digest about the new office space.

California Closets design consultant Cara Carrasco had worked with the Bobby Berk team twice before, so she was the obvious choice to help him achieve this innovative work and storage space.

Bobby wanted the space to operate as a storage closet for samples and a printer, but also be able to handle some carry-over clothing.

HOW CALIFORNIA CLOSETS DID IT

Because the “home” would host his professional team as well as dinner parties (because its dining room is larger than Bobby’s own!), there were a number of subtle features Cara added to the design to give it all the customization Bobby desired.

For example, an oversized printer needed to be integrated into the closet but had the potential to create dead space that wouldn’t be useful in the future.

To avoid this, Cara installed support poles above the printer so that when it’s removed the area can be used for long, hanging clothing.

When it came to the aesthetics, Cara worked with Bobby’s team to draw inspiration from the rest of the home, leaning into natural textures, black accents, and mixed metal hardware.

Cara also integrated stunning lighting elements above the hanging rods and shoe racks to illuminate details such as gold support poles against the black backing.

final result

The contrast between black and linen that we used in this design is always a crowd favorite, and the result is absolutely gorgeous.
