How California Closets Designs Better Lives and Builds Hope

In December of 2021, violent tornados moved across regions of Western Kentucky and damaged many homes and businesses. The aftermath of this was truly catastrophic and has continued to have long-lasting effects on the communities affected.

In the aftermath of these tornados, our team knew we wanted to do something to help. So when one of our Louisville designers, Nicole Townsend, heard about a volunteering event hosted by the Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF), Cross Roads Missions, and Help Build Hope for a Great Day of Service to help build walls that would frame a Habitat for Humanity home near Mayfield, Kentucky, it was an easy decision for our team to volunteer.

“The Help Build Hope Event was presented to me through the Building Industry Association of Greater Louisville (BIA) and hosted by the non-profit Building Industry Charitable Foundation (BICF). There were workstations all over the BIA parking lot for each team to build several walls. As the teams started to stack the walls, it was amazing to see this home being built right in front of my eyes. Markers were passed out for everyone to walk through and write positive and encouraging notes on the frames of this newly built home for someone in need. This event definitely built my hope up and I know whoever ends up with this new Habitat for Humanity Home will be just as hopeful too!”

It was amazing to see how a team of our employees and even some of their children rallied together to go help with the project.

What an amazing experience to work with a few Ohio and Kentucky Designers on this community project. I loved that we were able to include a few of our teenage kids to help out, including my 16-year-old daughter. After two hours of completing wall kits, I was so surprised that the event coordinators actually took the wall sections that we helped build and stood them up so we could walk inside the home… a memory that I won’t forget. We helped frame an entire home in less than 2 hours! The family that is receiving this particular home had their home destroyed by a tornado. Truly building and designing better lives.

The build was a great experience. It was very nice to see all those people come together to help build homes for families who were affected by the recent tornadoes. Mayor Greg Fischer was there and offered a word of encouragement and support. The weather was great and the overall mood was positive and energizing. It feels good to be part of a team that recognizes and gives back to the community!

Volunteering for a community build like this was something I always wanted to do, but never really knew how to. So, when Nicole Townsend shared the opportunity I was excited to participate. As a designer, we love creating things but we never really get to build anything so it was fun to be able to construct something for a change. We could not have wished for better weather, and the California Closets team and family that were part of our crew added to the great experience. It’s one of the reasons why I am proud to be a part of this company. We really do have a bunch of people who genuinely care about giving back to their community and designing better lives. It seems cliché but the act of giving is contagious and I’m hooked.
