Big payoff for this jewel box pantry

What Kristin Purcell wanted

Luxe home goods company HENRO founder Kristin Purcell didn’t have the luxury of space when it came to her pantry. The area off her kitchen was inordinately small.

Petite in footprint, with two access points, the space was barely a pass-through closet. So she — an experienced DIYer — sealed off the doorway to the dining room, providing additional wall space, but not fully solving her problem.

Since the remaining doorway left the pantry exposed to the kitchen, she wanted the space to feel like a natural extension of her home.

That’s when she contacted California Closets for her custom pantry solution.

“The pantry was quite small but with a little modification we gained so much space.”

How California Closets designed it

Collaborating with designer Candice Clarke at California Closets Fort Myers, they mapped out a solution to maximize the diminutive space while ensuring the overall design blended seamlessly with its surroundings.

Rather than taking the obvious approach and lining the back wall, Candice left the upper back wall open and lined the side walls with storage instead. Initially, Kristin planned to use the open space for artwork, but ultimately decided on natural wood grain floating shelves to create a focal point and display area.

To further customize her storage potential and optimize aesthetic appeal, Candice incorporated an “appliance garage” — a designated cabinet to house small electronics behind receding doors, thus preserving valuable counter space.

“I always look at the other spaces in the home to gauge the aesthetic and make sure my design complements the space.”

Final result

With a crisp white finish for the door and drawer fronts and matte gold hardware, the new space beautifully echoes the same sense of serenity seen throughout her home.

It’s as if this pantry was always meant to be there.
