His and her nurseries for NASCAR's Angela Ruch

Custom reach-in nursery closets for Angela Ruch featuring Specialty Linen and Shadow Black cabinetry with gold hardware by California Closets

What Angela Ruch wanted

Interior designer Summer Tubridy, of Onyx Interiors, found herself with a fun project on her hands: to design a feminine yet sophisticated nursery for NASCAR racer Angela Ruch. To optimize the reach-in closet storage for a growing girl, she enlisted California Closets of Charlotte. Several months later, Summer found herself working with Angela — this time to transform another room into a nursery for a baby boy. Again, Summer called California Closets for round two.

“Angela was open to thinking outside the box, which allowed Summer and I to have a lot of fun designing both spaces. These became two of my most favorite projects to date.”

Custom girl's nursery reach-in closet design for Angela Ruch featuring Specialty Linen drawers, gold Swagger handles, and a black Chroma countertop by California Closets

How California Closets designed it

Now familiar with the home, CalClosets design consultant Claire Williams set out to design a fresh solution for the new baby. As with the girl’s closet, the priority was to create a personal space that worked well for the infant and toddler stages but would easily transition as the child grew. With this in mind, Claire designed both systems with a careful balance of shelving, hanging, drawers, and shoe storage. To create cohesion between the overall nursery designs and the closets, Claire added gold hardware with a light Linen finish in the girl’s reach-in and a sleek mix of Shadow Black and Linen finishes for the boy’s. Chroma countertops on the custom drawer units — black in hers and gold in his — add an element of sophisticated contrast to each.

Final result

The result: two complimentary closets with big personality and ample storage. By mixing design elements with effective and flexible organization, each closet is efficiently optimized. Plus, mirrors placed on opposite walls not only help to visually enlarge the rooms but also capture the Charlotte skyline to pull the city right inside.
