Collaboration shapes their perfect California Closets media wall

What the client wanted
Envisioning a living room that felt timeless and refined, Laura and Adam dreamed of a full floor-to-ceiling, custom built-in media unit that could discreetly conceal every wire, gaming console, movie, and board game while fitting in seamlessly with their home’s style. Nothing about the space was working for their new home. But nothing about the space was working for their new home. The IKEA cabinets merely a temporary solution. They wanted the sophistication of a clean, integrated system with just a touch of open shelving to showcase a few of their favorite items.

“We have had such an amazing experience with Jenny. I can't imagine a better design consultant to work with to make our dreams come true.”

How California Closets designed it
Working with California Closets of British Columbia, the couple met with designer Jenny Rota for an in-home consultation to map out their vision. The blank wall left a lot of possibilities and a chance to turn a simple space into the centerpiece of the room. Laura and Adam were initially drawn to higher-end materials, but Jenny had the creative freedom to balance their elevated vision at a level that fit their budget.
With the couple’s budget — and style (a thoughtful mix of vintage and classic pieces) — in mind, Jenny refined the design, mixing finishes for a space that turned what had been an afterthought into a statement. When she sent it to Laura and Adam, they fell in love instantly. “I was able to incorporate their favourite features in smaller, intentional ways so they became true focal points,” notes Jenny.

“The collaborative experience is truly what sets California Closets apart. When we blend our design expertise with our clients’ needs, the work becomes more than custom cabinetry; it becomes a reflection of how they want to live.”

Final result
The custom media wall feels timeless, tailored, and quietly luxurious. The rich wood grain finish adds soft sophistication, while the shaker doors ground the design in classic simplicity. Flanking towers feature hidden touch-release hardware, allowing every belonging to disappear seamlessly, while subtle open shelving offers just enough space for curated moments. What began as a blank wall became a beautifully functional centerpiece that reflects how Laura and Adam live.
