A stylish and seamless bedroom office for two

What the client wanted
This Bay Area couple wanted to infuse some useful function into an awkwardly-sized alcove. The goal: a multipurpose work area that the two could share.
While storage was a priority, style was equally important. The alcove, located in the primary bedroom, is situated across from the door, making it a focal point right when you walk in. Desiring a streamlined solution that maintained the home’s minimalist aesthetic, the client turned to Cara Misley of California Closets Greater Bay Area to take the space from funky to functional.

How California Closets designed it
First, Cara needed to determine an office solution that would work within the alcove’s unique shape — with a large window centered between shallow side walls, options were limited. Over meetings in the client’s kitchen, Cara drafted virtual layouts in real time to work through the challenge, allowing them to collaborate on the details and arrive at the final design. Ultimately, they landed on one sleek desk, separated by hidden storage that creates two designated workspaces. Its top extends seamlessly into inset shelving at either end, customized for depth to maximize every square inch of the shallow walls. Because the shelving is recessed, smaller everyday items remain discreetly out of view upon entry, but are still within easy reach while seated. The design’s light, natural finish creates fluidity with the room’s hardwood floors and neutral wall color, while slab drawers finish the look with clean lines.

“I love the clean lines and how well the design transitions — it’s a minimalist design that blends in and stands out at the same time.”

Final result
An integrated solution with ample storage that feels organic to the room’s architecture. Center drawers hide office supplies and provide symmetry to the design, while the custom shelving units offer plenty of display space. It’s a minimalist look, maximized for modern-day living.
