How a closet changed Olga Naiman’s life — and how it can change yours, too

When Olga Naiman was looking to upgrade her primary closet, it wasn’t merely an ask for organization. She wanted to create a space for her future self, a place that could pull her into an alternate reality.

“I’ve always been drawn to the aesthetic movement: that sumptuous, art-for-art’s-sake sensibility where beauty isn’t decorative — it’s the whole point.” She wanted a space that immediately pulled her out of the to-do list and into something richer.

She had the design eye to know what she wanted. In the world of interiors, where trends often eclipse deeper intention, Olga Naiman stands apart. An author, editor, stylist, designer, and creator of the philosophy known as Spatial Alchemy, she approaches her work as a form of personal evolution. It lives at the intersection of aesthetics, psychology, and spirituality — an uncommon blend that is redefining how we understand our homes.

Together with California Closets New York City, she was able to create a final result that achieved her dream of a perspective-shifting space. Here are her tips for how you can achieve yours.

Set an intention, clear away the rest

To begin, decide what you want your space to be. Olga wanted to make getting dressed and being in her body an experience. “My future self feels luscious, decadent, and sensual,” she says. “The ancient Greek sense of aliveness, pleasure, beauty — the experience of being fully present in your body.” To bring that philosophy into practice, the foundation of our design offers a neutral slate on which she could infuse her design sensibilities. A clean layout allows for angles and focal points to feature pops of personality that take the space out of the ordinary, like Arts and Crafts-inspired wallpaper on the ceiling. “You look up to find a canopy of lush, twisting flora overhead, and it instantly changes your perspective.”

With your intention in place, clear the rest away. Olga recommends removing outdated identities from your space — clearing clutter and belongings that represent who you’ve been rather than who you’re becoming— to make room for everything that follows.

Focus on visual impact

To create a space that feels like a departure, focus on visual impact, not just function. We created a strong focal point that hits the moment you walk in, highlighting her hanging clothes — color-rich kaftans, vintage pieces, textiles — flanking a central column of shelves. That column became something unexpected: a dressing room altar where Olga keeps a rotating collection of objects that represent who she wants to become.

Olga also believes in the power of a ‘portal point.’ “Place an object that embodies how you want to feel where your eye lands first. This becomes the energetic anchor of the space.”

Layer in sensuality

A closet is a collection of rectangles by nature — doors, drawers, and shelves. So introducing curves and organic forms breaks the geometry: a rounded ceramic vessel on a shelf, an ornate mirror with scrollwork, a shaggy rug whose texture softens all those hard lines. In her book, Spatial Alchemy, Olga encourages you to aim for juxtaposition in every room — rectangles against luscious, rounded shapes. Smooth brass hardware against the nubby texture of a hand-knotted rug. The tension between those opposites is what gives a space its charge.

This dressing room was designed to reinforce the woman who savors. The woman who lingers instead of rushing. The woman who enters a space and lets it slow her down. And for Olga, over time, that’s exactly who started showing up.

Elements of Practical Magic

Some of the most meaningful surprises can be small functional add-ons you might not have considered. Relish in the details as you design to ensure every moment is magical.

The valet hook was one for Olga: “It’s such a simple addition, but it’s shifted a whole behavior. I now prepare my outfit the evening before, hanging it on the hook so I can see it waiting for me in the morning.” A dedicated drawer for travel accessories was another revelation, along with proper shoe storage. “I’d always kept them on the floor of my closet, tucked under hanging clothes, which meant kneeling down every time I needed a pair.” Now they’re displayed on an open shelf at the entrance of the dressing room, each pair visible and accessible. “It sounds minor, but seeing your belongings treated with that level of respect changes something in you.”

The jewelry drawers were also transformative. “Gorgeous compartmentalized drawers with gold dividers and cream leather lining make opening them feel like opening a jewel box,” she reflects. Brass hardware throughout picks up on that warmth and enhances the feeling of a living, breathing collection rather than storage behind closed doors.

The result: Olga is who she wants to be

“Being inside this space makes me immediately relax and enter into a different reality. That’s not hyperbole — I can feel my shoulders drop and my breathing change when I walk in.” It’s become a transition space for her, between the noise of daily life and the quieter, more intentional version of herself. Has it manifested the woman she hoped it would? “She’s a work in progress — always in process,” she admits.

Olga admits that the change was a little slow to take effect. “The closet was so much more than anything I’d ever had that part of me couldn’t receive it. I see this with my clients all the time — when you design for your future self, there’s a gap between who you are and who you’re becoming, and that gap can feel uncomfortable.”

Over the next six months, she said something shifted. The dressing room didn’t just change how she got dressed — it changed how she showed up. “I started being more intentional about every part of my morning. That’s exactly how Spatial Alchemy works: you change the container, and the contents shift to match. It is design — but with soul.”
