What is the difference between California Closets and other companies?
Partnership. Our team members are your partners throughout the entire process. From your initial inquiry, to the installation and beyond, our goal is to assist you in achieving your goals and to make the California Closets experience in your home, second to none.
What is the difference between floor and wall-mounted systems?
The Classic line is primarily wall-mounted. This is done by attaching a heavy metal suspension rail to every stud in the wall. It's based on the same system as your kitchen cabinets. This style of installation is considered more secure than a floor based system that doesn’t mount to the studs.
How do you clean the systems?
Your storage system has been designed to provide long-lasting use with minimal care. Vertical partitions and shelving for most California Closets systems are constructed of a melamine laminate that is thermally fused to furniture-grade substrate.
For routine cleaning, a mild, non-oily cleanser will remove most dust and smudges. For more stubborn marks, such as residue from metal hangers on plastic-covered poles, a low abrasive, environmentally sensitive cleanser will do the trick. After cleaning, always rinse the surface thoroughly with a clean, damp cloth. Failure to rinse after cleaning is the single greatest cause of damage to any laminate surface.
Some products will damage high-pressure laminates. Do not use steel wool, acidic or abrasive cleaners, oven or rust cleaners, cleaners containing lye, acetone, gasoline, lacquer thinner, or similar products. Avoid using products that contain oil, as they can leave streaks on the surface after drying.
If cleaning a stubborn stain leaves a dull spot, apply wax to bring back the shine.
How do I change the configuration of my system?
All shelving and poles are adjustable within sections. There are two types of shelving: fully adjustable shelves, which require moving shelf supports to a different location, and locking shelves, which require turning the shelf cam (under the shelf edges) a ¾ turn to unlock the cam. (Contact your franchise for more specific directions). Poles are also adjustable within sections. More complicated changes will need to be handled by your local franchise.
Why do you use laminates?
Laminates are very consumer friendly. They are durable, long lasting, do not fade, easy to care for, consistent in their quality, and are more environmentally friendly than other possible materials. Additionally, they have a wide array of matching materials that allow flexibility in design and use.
How can I get the best system for me?
California Closets has a wide range of product lines, finishes, accessories, and design options available for you. To pinpoint what will work best for you, consider the following:
- What look do you want? Traditional, clean, contemporary? The Classic is clean and off the floor; the Suite is a more traditional, wardrobe, build-in cabinetry look; the Virtuoso is more contemporary. Home Office can be designed towards any of these styles.
- What range of budget are you trying to stay within? Classic is the entry level; Suite is mid to higher range; Virtuoso is higher end. Home Office and Garage can be designed to fit any range. Finishes also vary in price.
- Who else is involved in this project? Get their feedback. If they can’t be part of the design process, bring their ideas and needs to the table so that everyone will appreciate the results.
- In what timeframe are you hoping to have the project done? Some items are special orders and can add time to the project. If timeliness is an issue, the designer can steer you to the product lines and options that are in stock.
- What specific organizational needs do you have? Determine this. There are advantages to each product line and accessory. By doing this, the designer can best answer how your needs match various options.

I noticed your systems are 14” deep. Why did you choose that depth?
When California Closets first started in 1978, we decided to base our systems upon client needs, not on what is easiest to product. The 14” depth is based upon two facts. First, folded clothing is 14” on average (measured front to back). If we make the system 14” deep, a folded items fits perfectly on the shelves. Second, a hanging garment with sleeves, like a shirt or jacket, measures 24” from elbow to elbow. Placing the garment pole about 12” from the back wall, the garment won't hang against that wall.
Unfortunately, sheets of material don’t come in widths optimal for 14” boards, but we decided to do the extra work to make your closets function better.
