Home Office in Central Jersey?

Central Jersey can be an expensive place to live. Between astronomical property taxes, education bills, and other costs that come with living in this dense Tri-State area, it's hard to keep costs down and quality of life high. Add in the often epic commute times that many Central Jersey residents have to deal with, and you can see why Central Jersey homeowners are interested in installing a home office in their house. But did you know that a home office -- other than the cost of installing them -- can often add extra costs to your monthly expenses? Here are a few tips on how to keep your home office from stacking on too much to your already-hefty monthly expenses.

3 Home Office Energy-Saving Tips

Here are a few tips from the Alliance to Save Energy:

"Energy Star" is no joke. You can cut related annual energy expenses by 30 percent simply by using Energy Star-labeled computers, monitors, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, multi-function devices, lighting, cordless phones, answering machines, audio equipment, and room air conditioners.

Use the sun. In the winter let the sun help heat your home office by keeping blinds or drapes on sun-exposed windows open in the daytime. Retain heat overnight by closing the blinds after dark. In the summer, reduce cooling costs by drawing shades or blinds on sun-exposed windows and glass doors.

Use efficient lighting. Electricity use obviously increases when you have lights on all day. And in warm weather, inefficient lighting can overheat your office, thus upping your cooling costs. Save money by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and task lighting in your home office. CFLs burn cooler and use up to 75 percent less energy than either halogen or incandescent bulbs.
