Why Summer Is The Best Time To Renovate Your Kids' Bedrooms

Let's face it. Once school is out for the summer, kids don't want to think about teachers, books and homework for a few months.

Their minds quickly turn to pool parties, summer movies and riding bikes all day long.

All of that makes summer a perfect time to redo their bedrooms.

After the immediate euphoria of summer vacation dies down a little bit, sit down with your kids one evening and have a little chat about their work spaces. Kids mature so fast and they can outgrow their bedroom configurations very quickly. Talk with them and find out what worked for them and what didn't.

Once you have a good handle what needs to be done, you can go about making the necessary improvements.

As children get older, school becomes more demanding and their workload gets more intense. When they are in elementary school, perhaps a small desk and a couple of drawers is good enough. Once they reach junior high and high school, they will need more desk space for extra books and a computer.

In time, their bedrooms become akin to a home office, a place where they can get their work done and let their minds stretch and expand.

Another important change that your kids go through is the development of personal style and varied interests. Younger kids might be ready to move on from toy chests and plush animals to pursuits such as learning an instrument, reading books or writing poetry. The bright colors of youth may eventually give way to more muted tones.

Once they get to higher grade levels, their interests will become more focused. They will prepare for college or begin the process of starting an entrepreneurial business of their own design.

Giving them a room that can adapt with them is so important. It not only gives them what they require, but it will also allow them to feel a bit of mastery over their space, which will serve to build helpful confidence once school starts again.

As they grow, be sure to check in with them once in a while to make sure their rooms are serving their needs as well as they can.

Remember, the best time to make changes is the summer, before they hit the ground running in the fall. Take advantage of the beautiful distractions of summer.
