We all have different organizing styles that reflect our personality and experience, so we all need unique approaches to de-cluttering and organizing.
Here are some classic organizational archetypes, along with some ideas about how to go about your next organization project. Which type describes you best?
The Minimalist: You abhor clutter and get rid of anything that hasn’t been used in at least a year. You’ve already got good organizational habits, so you’re feeling efficient, productive, and relaxed.
Best solution: You probably don’t need a lot of help, so a simple system might be all you require. Think about replacing the one-shelf-one-rod closet system your home came with or go another route entirely and create a showpiece in the living room with an elegant media center. Minimalism need not be dull.
The Perfectionist: You perfectly balance an inventory of new and old items; everything is labeled and color coded; items in storage rotate with each season. You know where everything is at all times.
Best solution: There are always greater heights of organization you can achieve. Perhaps it’s time to look into specialized closet accessories like jewelry dividers, wrapping paper holders in craft rooms, or valet rods in the master bedroom to take your system to the next level.
The Sentimentalist: You have a hard time letting go of anything memorable; from concert tickets to art projects made in elementary school to favorite clothing items, regardless of whether they fit or not.
Best solution: You might have to make some tough choices here, weeding out the truly remarkable items from the less distinguished ones. If you can’t bear to part with anything, the best thing to do is display them appropriately. Think of options in your bedroom, media center, kitchen, or home office to showcase collections, awards, or favorite photos. Turn your house into an ever-changing museum of your life with you as the curator.
The Accumulator: You keep everything! You might even have duplicates of things, because you’ve lost track of what you already own. Your clutter probably stresses you out, but you’re not sure how to start organizing or - heaven forbid - getting rid of things.
Best solution: You’ve got two choices in terms of which direction you want to proceed. If you’re ready to whittle down your belongings, you can peruse our home organization tips and start from square one.
If you’ll never break your old habits, you will likely need a storage solution that is adjustable and can accommodate what you’ve got now and what you expect you might have in years to come. Consider designing a custom garage storage solution, so that you can keep your collections and still fit the car!
So, which type were you? Or, can you think of another organizational type that isn't included on our list?
