Our first prize winner Pat Murphy won a closet makeover valued at $20,000, plus an in-person de-cluttering session with a nationally-renowned organizational expert.

Design consultant Steve Rothgery helped Pat turn a cluttered, chaotic office into a neat and productive workspace for all of her projects.

Pat’s story:

Pat was struggling to stay productive in a space that contained mountains of clutter.

Her office – which had once been her “creative refuge” – was now piled high with books, newspapers, magazines, papers and reference materials. Some items were from her own projects, but she had also inherited her father’s paperwork after his death and was helping her mother to manage her medical care.

Trapped in a seemingly never-ending collection of papers, she knew she was losing the “battle against chaos”.

The California Closets solution:

Pat’s goal was to have “an office where every paper has a place, where I can find a pen that writes on my very first try, and there’s always a clear surface on which to work.”

Design consultant Steve Rothgery got to work designing a system that took advantage of the previously unutilized vertical space in the office – with storage shelves and bookcases galore.

He also devised a system to make better use of a secondary room connected by pocket doors to the office. With a new storage unit, closet system and a wall bed, this multi-purpose room can be used for exercise and stretching, as a guest room or dressing room, or as an expansion that turns Pat’s office into an office suite.

To get started, Pat cleared out mountains of paperwork. In one afternoon, she worked with an organization expert to clear out seven boxes of used books to donate, eight boxes of manuscripts for a university’s special collection and eight bags of paper for recycling.

Now Pat has a space where she is not overwhelmed by clutter, and instead can focus on working productively and creatively.
